Another great one by Brooks

It's a bit old, but after browsing the web for a good read, I found this one by David Brooks about the "Democratization of Taste." I tend to agree with him about his take, but what do y'all think?

If you've never read Ken Myer's "All God's Children and Blue Suede Shoes," you should, if for no other reason than to glean statements that will be sure annoy Dr. Foreman. Basically, it makes the argument that being a Christian should bend one's taste away from the "popular" to the "high."

Anyhow, it turns out that "Christ and Culture" was quite a relevant class, because if it's one thing students are generally involved in after they graduate, it's that protean thing called "culture."

That's a great one, all right. Brooks is always brilliant. But glancing back through that piece, I'm wondering how much of this taste-tribalism can be traced back to the rise of Protestantism? (Josiah jokes a lot about "Reformed popes" dotting the countryside, being the grand high poohbahs of their own little worlds.)

Ken Myers does definitions:

"popupular" = the pca, or anything with drums

"high" = dead, white guys
