The Virgins and their wings

Josiah has brought it to my attention that I failed to write anything about Cash's death: this is because I was too busy listening to Johnny to write about him. Alright that's not entirely true because I was also going to Yo La Tengo in Atlanta, but I listened to Cash on the way. And they opened with a cover and dedicated one of their last songs to him. It made me wonder how many other bands all over America were doing the same thing... its amazing how much an impact on people one artist can have. I've never been a huge Cash fan, but I've appreciated him ever since I was turned onto him through Mike Ness (of Social Distortion) in high school. I suppose I should make like everyone else is and posthumously update my album collection with a little Cash. Aaron Mesh said it best already.

In the meantime, though, everyone should make like a lime and head to the nearest venue to catch Yo La Tengo before they stop making music. I haven't been so impressed since I saw Crooked Fingers back in March or April or something like that; all three Yo La's are phenomenal, and the band utterly defies simple classification.

Well, I think Yo la tengo is ok, Cash was the man, and I don't know what on earth you're talking about. I assume you mean Johnny Cash?

I just found out about another Atlanta band that defies classification: a fir-ju well. You can check out some of their tracks at their self-titled website. Also, do you like Mogwai? I've heard them a little on Album 88 (Georgia State's station) and liked them alright, but a very musically-inclined friend was wearing their tshirt the other day and told me to listen to them more.

Also, I read In Season, Out of Season. Ellul has a lot of interesting points to make about society, but it's a shame that he's so influenced by Barth. I find him to be a kindred spirit otherwise - I especially liked his section on tourism, since the family homestead is in the Destin area. I still opt for the aristocratic beaches that require walking over miles of dunes, rather than the drive-through strips of sand, complete with showers and rented beach chairs.

I'll check out a fir-ju well soon... Mogwai's great, I recommend the black LP that pairs with a white EP (they have identical covers, but one's black and the other's white), sorry I don't remember the names right now. Album 88 is actually how I was turned onto them, too.

Yeah, Barth's influence is unfortunate in Ellul; I'm glad you took the time to check Ellul out. I'm writing my senior thesis (philosophy) mostly on Ellul, so I'll probably have a lot more to say about Ellul as the semester progresses.
