real life
There was this commercial on TV tonight while I was watching Simpsons advertising a local career training college. The thesis of the commercial is "if you want to earn more, you have to learn more." What a farce!!
[I actually just wrote a lot more, but decided to delete it...I'm leaving you with my gut reaction.]

It's true. Earning more generally requires learning more. However, as you and others have found, the converse of that does not necessarily obtain.

Earning more requires that you learn more of the right stuff. To say unqualifiedly that learning more will help in earning more is a farce, as everyone with a liberal arts education must find out sometime during his/her life.

I tend to agree with Jeanette. "Earning more requires that you learn more of the right stuff." I have yet to obtain my college degree, but my Master Plumbing license has made me plenty of money. (Thank God.)

The statement was qualified, not by what was said, but by who said it - a career training college as opposed to a liberal arts college.

That's true, Kevin. Good contextualist point. :)
