FIVE

This week marks five years of blogging. I can't remember the exact day, just either the 3rd, 4th, or 5th of October. My earliest archives are lost in the bowels of Blogger somewhere. But it's five years of blogging, so I'll celebrate today.

My blog has really twisted and turned. I blog about so many different things. Sometimes I've been tempted to start a special topics blog, but my philosophy is to keep it all together, because it's all me and reflects where I am in life.

In October 2003, I had a bad cold, was struggling with my commute to Baton Rouge, and reading Harry Potter 3 and 4. Fall 2003 was my best semester of grad school. And just in case you were wondering, my key signature is E flat major.

In October 2004, I was rejoicing in the coolest pens ever, teaching a college course on my own for the first time, gave a conference paper that was a originally a seminar paper and found out my seminar professor died the day before I gave the paper (he was very ill), and--whoops!--got pregnant with Ellis.

In October 2005, we started Early Intervention with Ellis, learned that babies don't automatically get born with the knowledge of how to sleep, took Ellis on public transit for the first time, made a pumpkin pie, and took Ellis to his first academic conference. And just in case you were wondering, my Peanuts character is Woodstock.

In October 2006, I was cramming in trips to a variety of rare books libraries, in nightmare mode with my thesis, and impressed with Ellis's mad signing skillz. Well, to be honest, that month was pretty much constant depression over my thesis.

And now it's October 2007. I'm no longer blogging grad school stuff, because I'm not in grad school anymore. Nor am I doing academic writing at the moment. I do have some books I want to pull out and I do want to work on transcribing and analyzing some pieces from Oxford213, the facsimile I have of some 14th/15th c pieces.

Right now it feels like all deaf all the time. I'm not really sure where it all began, but now my blog has taken turn for the political. It's kind of funny how controversial everything seems to be getting, because my personality tends to shy away a bit from controversy. It's a tender line between an enjoyable conversation and an argument. I kind of miss my old blog sometimes, that complained over medieval Latin and shared pumpkin pie recipes, chugging along as blithely as a personal blog does. This still is a personal blog. I don't know where it's going right now.

But I look forward to more years of blogging.

You studied Medival Latin?

I am glad my grad school days are long over. I bet you are relieved that you have done your grad studies already :)

Happy five years! Now, do you have an amazing memory for October through the years, or did your archives come in handy? Seriously, I read the whole post marvelling in your recalling abilities... and then remembered something called archives. Ha.

I have to laugh over the blog evolution, because I totally understand what you're talking about. I love your blog though-- it's exposed me to many things outside my usual sphere. That, as well as your wellcrafted writing, will always keep me coming back! :)
