QOD
Tomorrow Ellis and I are flying to the warm South from the cold North: two flights, transferring in ye olde filter to all southbound: Atlanta (whose airport I seriously don't mind; it's the sitting for 2 hours on the tarmac that gets me). So has anyone flown with children recently? What's the deal with taking juice/food/cups in the carryon. Are they going to snark about his sippy cup? I can't buy all the juice/food he will require at the airport terminal. Eek! $
I'm also open to all suggestions for entertainment to keep him occupied on my lap. Eek!! We've a couple smallcars, crayons, books, laceup board (he loves to fiddle), and i may spring for a mini etchasketch.
sad days: it'll probably his last freebie flight.

When I traveled last time, they were pretty picky about liquids. I had brought a full-sized toothpaste--not thinking that it was a liquid--and I had to leave it behind. I also had a gallon baggie (just because we were out of quart sized baggies), and had to buy a quart-sized one instead before they would let me go through security. Whatever!
Anyway, if I were you, I would get the juice in the terminal if you can, and perhaps ask the flight attendant for some extra if he's really thirsty. Bringing food in shouldn't be a problem.
Who are you flying? I hope you guys have a terrific trip!!

Make sure your sippy cups are empty when you go through security. You can fill up with water or juice (purchased in the terminal) after that point. I don't believe food is a problem as long as it is solid (don't mess with yogurt or pudding), so bring that stuff from home. As far as toys go, hit your local dollar store. Kids love new, cheapo items to play with -- they don't even have to be toys. I think Livia entertained herself for a l-o-n-g time with the cups the flight attendants provided.
Enjoy your trip!

when we flew at christmas (out of a certain southern city) we had no problem taking a sippy cup of liquid on board. we even took it through security and no one so much as raised an eyebrow. There's a pretty strong exception for people traveling with children, I gather. A sippy cup full was enough to get us onto the plane, where they were pretty generous about giving us drinks for her. We didn't really want to pay airport terminal prices, either. At the same time, in a pinch, you can buy something or fill up with water after you get through security or you can make the flight attendant give you something as soon as you get on board.

When I flew with Caleb about month ago I brought a sippy cup full of milk no problem. I also brought a thing constructed like a Capri Sun (i.e. straw, sealed) but it had milk in it no problem either. We had no issue with any food we brought (they don't care as long as it's not liquid). Caleb had fun screwing and unscrewing a couple of plastic bottles; he also enjoyed nibbling on crayons. Have a great trip! Enjoy the sunny south.

Are there any powder mixes out there you can mix with water after you are through security? Any that aren't just colored sugar? What about Tang? Do they still make that? I know powdered milk is pretty gross, but E might not know the diff.

I haven't flown with a toddler for ages, so I will step aside for all the fine advice those of you who are more recent Travelers With A Toddler are giving. A bunch of Twats, all of you! But isn't it QED? not QOD?
Sorry, the Singing Latin teacher mom had to put her 2 bits in. We are thinking and praying for you non-stop. Call us as soon as you have any news. Kisses and hugs, mom

I'm so sorry I haven't been checking your blog daily and I'm late for this. I'm *the* specialist in flying with young children (particularly 9 hour international flights). You'll be FINE. And YES, it's very sad that this will be his last freebie flight. Enjoy while you can!! My brother- and sister-in-law even made a trip to Vancouver with a 2 month old just so they could travel before their older son's 2nd birthday! :)
