Oscar
It would've been fun to liveblog the Oscars, but since I only saw 2 of last year's movies (The Devil Wears Prada and Cars....I know, I'm SO cool), it would've been not informative. And I had real people to spend it with, worth trudging out in the wintry mix falling from the sky.
So quick Oscar impressions before I go to bed:
Favorite Dresses
*Gwyneth Paltrow
*Kirsten Dunst
*Cate Blanchet
*Mrs. Morricone
*Helen Mirren
*Cameron Diaz (I didn't like it at first, but it grew on me)
Movies I want to see after seeing the Oscars (but actually I wanted to seem them anyway)
*The Queen
*Pan's Labirynth
*Little Miss Sunshine
*Letters from Iwo Jima
Biggest disappointements:
*Peter O'Toole (it's about time! even though I was glad the other guy won)
*Philip Glass
Boob award
*Beyonce
Biggest suprises
*I thought Ellen was kind of funny at times
*uh, Melissa Etheridge?
Warm fuzzy awards
*Martin Scorsese
*Ennio Morricone (I so love that he spoke Italian!)
*I heart Helen!
Okay, that's it!

I was really hoping Will Smith would win for The Pursuit of Happyness. It's the first really serious role I remember seeing him in, and he was incredibly convincing.
We saw Pan's Labyrinth. I liked it more than Tim did. It was a bloodbath, though, more horror than fantasy if I had to give it a genre. I think I'd like to see it again sometime, maybe at home. The whole film is dark (literally), and sometimes hard to see in a darkened theater.

I tried to watch all the way through, but I got so tired at 11:30. I have seen Cars a few too many times now. I saw Little Miss Sunshine and enjoyed it. But that is all I have seen.

I think it's more like, "uh, An Inconvenient Truth and Al Gore? A green what and how does it win?"

I know. I always want Philip Glass to win. And Peter O'Toole looks like he is on his last legs. He needs to win sometime soon. Why *didn't* he win for Lawrence of Arabia? I'm becoming convinced that time is a better award of merit than the oscars. Which I suppose is a bit self-evident, but you know. It's just a statue, but I want it to go to the people who matter. And not to horrendously bad songs that everyone will forget by next year if they wish to keep their sanity.

PS If I could look like anyone at the Oscars last night, I would choose Penelope Cruz. *Loved* her hair!!

I saw about five minutes of the Oscars last night since I was studying, but I was so glad to hear this morning that Scorsese won (even though I haven't yet seen The Departed). He's needed one of those things for a while now, I think.
You must see Little Miss Sunshine! And maybe we can rent one of those other movies while you're here, if any of them is out yet. We'll see how your timing works out. =)

I think Jennifer Hudson should have won the boob award. Wait, do you mean boob as in "idiotic" or boob as in...breast? Jennifer Hudson definitely wins the cleavage award.

I'm with you, funke, you want Philip Glass to win. He's an awesome composer!! And I'm still peeved the year Titanic (!??!?!?!) beat out his score for Kundun.
And there's all these honororary awards for people who SHOULD have won the first time: Ennio Morricone. And why DIDN'T Peter O'Toole win for Lawrence? You hate for someone else deserving to not get an Oscar just because it's Peter's turn to get what he should have gotten before.
As for Al Gore. Forget your politics or even if you don't believe in global warming. Is there something particularly wrong with being responsible towards our environment? Taking care of the earth? Is there??!

I have no problem with being green and responsible--I wish there were a program for recycling church bulletins, for example. :) However, if a song is going to win best original song, it had better also be good as well as green...

Church bulletins! There you go!
I agree, Etheridge's song was Boo! Not Oscar-worthy.
I wasn't responding to her so much as Dis-like for Al Gore Thus Dis-like for Anything Green vibes I've been getting from around. Whatever, people! I haven't seen An Inconvenient Truth (yet, I want to), but from what I hear it's very well done and thought-provoking.

Now I see why Peter O'Toole didn't win Best Actor in 1962, although I would still give just a few shades of a point more to Peter O'Toole, call it British snobbery...man, to have lived in the 60s when the studio model was disintegrating and independent film producers hadn't reached the scale of needing to churn out blockbusters in order to make ends meet. No wonder so many oscar-worthy actors, films, composers, etc. went by the wayside. The competition was just so much stiffer back then. But I sound so chronologically snobby and nostalgic. The years necessary have passed in order to prove those decades full of quality flicks. I am still uncertain how the current films will stand the proverbial test of time.

Fun reading your summary. And all the comments. I am one of those non-lovers of Al Gore, but I believe I am definitely green. No matter what my kids say! How many of those green Hollywood friends drive an SUV, throw away perfectly good clothes, shoes, household goods, etc, etc. I find it sickeningly hypocritical. And over in our corner...church dinners....how much gets thrown out there? What happened to the days when we brought all our own dishes from home, hauled them home and washed them?! I've been on a campaign.
I missed having L and W home to put in their votes for all the Oscar stuff.
