reporting from Avery Island
Fun article in today's CSM about the Tabasco factory on Avery Island, in south Louisiana. We always meant to go out to visit there, but never did. We had a time for a Saturday in the bayou, it was usually in a canoe in Barataria, paddling through former haunts of the pirate Jean Lafitte. *nostalgic sigh*
In other Louisiana-ish news, the new All the King's Men is released this Friday. I remember when they were filming parts of this a few years ago in our old neighborhood in New Orleans.

I don't know if you know but I was born in New Orleans and grew up in Slidell before living the rest of my childhood in Maine. During high school, I was back in the NO area touring with a theatre group. But I really want to go back and see what's there now, see my old house if it's still there, etc. We may just do that next year if I go to NO for the Deaf Women United conference. See and see.

Avery Island was cool. We went there with my mom and stepdad when they came down for a visit a few years ago, because my stepdad was a big fan of spicy food and already had one of those semi-tacky Tabasco ties. It was such a low-key factory after the oohs and aahs and commercialism of World of Coke... but they do have a little bar where you can sample all the various sauces, the Tabasco Cheez-its, the salsa, etc. I wish that the weather had been nicer so we could have visited the McIlhenny wildlife preserve with the egrets and nutria and such. =) We'll have to go back. Maybe if you guys make it down here with the little guy while we still live in BR, we could do that.
All the King's Men is on my list, since I loved the book but wasn't a fan of the cheese factor in the old film. It was what it was, and for that time period, it wasn't terrible or anything, but some of the acting is distractingly overdone. I'll be interested to see Sean Penn's take on Huey Long.
