Elvis sighting: sugar & spice or puppy dog tail!?

Yesterday marked the beginning of week 20 in the pregnancy. That is exactly half-way to the 40 weeks of a full-term pregnancy (don't ask me how they come with this method of measuring). It's exciting to think that we've arrived at the half-way mark unscathed. But now is when I really need to buckle down and get some things done (like sign up for some birthin' classes! yikes!).

The half-way mark is when we get our second ultrasound, complete with gender description. So this morning we found out whether Elvis is a girl or a boy. The ultrasound room was all high-tech with this cool high-resolution screen on the wall for us to see everything that was going on. Let me tell you, Elvis is a Wiggle Worm! After they measured all the normal stuff, they were trying to get a good profile shot of the head. After chasing Elvis around for about 15 min, they finally gave up. Already a bad kid! :) I thought it was really cool how clearly we could see all the parts, from the little foot to the chambers of the heart, and the spine, I thought, was especially cool, so they got me a good body shot.

Vertebra is horizontal going across the top, with the head on the right side looking down.

The real question of the day, though, is Elvis a boy or girl?

Well, there's little doubt here. Elvis is definitely a boy!!! I'm glad it's so...uh...obvious.
(It was pointed out to me later some confusion over what we're seeing in this picture. Think of it as the "diaper change" shot. We're looking at his little bum from the rear, with the legs and thighs on each side, and the little boy part in the middle--can't miss it. Arrow pointing straight towards it.)

Our friends had an ultrasound around 20 weeks, and for the past couple of months thought they were having their 4th girl. Last week, she had another one (since she's a bit of a high-risk, she has one every time), it turned out to be a boy. Of course, they're thrilled, since they don't have any boys, but I was starting to get worried...what if they messed up my gender description? And I don't have ultrasounds every time, so they couldn't see otherwise later. But we saw multiple angles of Elvis, and he's definitely a boy.

Chris is very excited. He really wanted a boy (partly, I think he just can't wait to play with the boy's toys). He wants a boy to teach how to build stuff and to take sailing. I pointed out that he could do that with a girl, too, but I think he really likes the idea of having a son to share life with.

Either way, I'm just really excited (though, now I hope the next one is a girl, because there is an awful lot of really cute pink stuff out there). I'm going to Target tonight to get the book I've picked out as his baby book. I picked out a girl one and a boy one a couple of weeks ago, and I was just waiting for today to decide which one to get.

We'll probably name him Ellis Thurman. We've always liked the name Ellis, and I discovered that it's a form of "Elijah," which means "Jehovah is God." Thurman is after Chris's grandfather. The girl's name we picked out was Sylvia Rose, which I still love, so I think I'll hang on to it. "Elvis," the working name we'll still go by, is sort of a nice combination of Ellis and Sylvia, incidently. Anyway, so now the grandmothers may be unleashed!!

UPDATE: I figured up the projection results from a couple of weeks ago. 5 voted for boy, 5 for girl, and 2 commented but didn't vote. Close race! Glad I didn't have to vote. :-)

Congratulations!!! I think I was right in my projection.

Yeah! It would have been sad to imagine a girl with lampchop sideburns (ie Elvis). And the picture is HI-larious! Boys are fun, I think their clothes are cooler, more like little adult clothes. It's been hard for me to make the switch, although I found some pretty tight high-top pink converse at the Thrift store today! sz 3! Cute!

I meant LAMBchop, oops

Oooooo awwwwww Oooooh... congratulations! I am so glad that you were able to find out. We didn't know if Fuller was a boy or girl until he was born, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. We had several u/s but none of them were conclusive. Dr. G thought that it was a girl, because usually the ones you can't see well are girls. We were all surprised when Gummy Bear was a boy- happily surprised because we really wanted a boy.
But, this isn't about me, is it.
Congratulations, it really is a fun ride to be on. Happy Pregnancy!

This grandmother broke her leash over lunch hour at Macy's!

I have to admit, I did sigh a teensy bit as I by-passed all the pink! But ooo-la-la! Boys clothes are cute, too!

Congratulations! I hope the last half of the pregnancy goes as smoothly as the first, and I absolutely love the name choice.

Such exciting news! I, too, love the name. And I really love little boys clothes... There are the cutest corduroys and nubby wool jackets out there. Have fun, grandmothers!!

Congrats! I am glad the ultrasound was so clear!

yay for boys! I especially loved the heart chambers and spine stuff for our ultrasound. so very cool!

Ellis is indeed a LOT like Elvis!

Yea, we were thinking today about how much Ellis and Elvis are alike, and is it just too weird? But then even if Elvis sticks as a cute little nickname...it is a cute little nickname. I mean, one wouldn't actually NAME their child Elvis, but it's kind of fun to CALL him that sometimes...especially when he's jiving, which my little guy does a lot of!

Yeah!! A little boy, that was my guess! I remember when we found out Caleb was a boy it felt like finding out I was pregnant all over again. Such a new excitement to know what you are having. Also love seeing the ultrasound pictures, especially the spine! Any chance we can see any more Jeannette tummy pics? :)
