These past few days I've been cleaning, shopping, stocking...getting our apt and our larder ready for me to check out. School starts in two weeks. Freezer full of stuff. Wood floors mopped.
My final stop was Walmart this morning. I really hate going there. Thankfully, one of the main reasons I hate going there I avoided this morning. I did not have to wait over 45 minutes to an hour in line--something I have done the past several times going there. I got there early enough.
Other reasons:
* I have to leave Orleans Parish. Okay, I'll concede, I'm lazy. But I really hate going out shopping and not being able to just go a couple blocks away.
* When I get there, I have to park a mile away. People don't put their carts in the designated cart parking areas, so various empty parking places are devoted to cart collection.
* Yet, when I need a cart, they somehow all disappear! IF I find a cart, it's a gimpy cart. (And it's a CART, not a buggy.) So I spend the whole time walking across this enormous store wrestling with a cart.
* Which leads me to my next point...It's a freakin' huge store. You can't find anything. I end up walking back and forth and back and forth (wrestling with aforementioned cart) wasting a lot of time and getting really cranky.
* If I finally find what I need, they're out of it. How many times do I stare in frustration at the blank spot on the shelf, the price tag smugly marking the spot?
* Checkout line woes, woes, woes. I count today as the exception. Those commercials about Walmart saving time haven't come to our Walmart. Half the checkouts are closed, and the other half overflowing. It takes around an hour to get through one.
* When they bag your stuff, they give you one bag PER item! What in the world makes them think I want so many of those stupid blue, plastic bags?! It can't be helpful to the environment, either.
One good thing about Walmart: I reward myself with a 40 cent Coke afterwards.
Caveat added November 2005: i can't believe how much commentage this entry has generated. I feel like I need to say something to all those of you who I don't even know coming to my site to partake of my Walmart dislike. This post is actually a bit satirical. I was feeling grumpy and punchy after a hot summer day in Louisiana. I'm still not a Walmart fan, but I'm not committed to hating it or anything. I'm not going to get all political about my most unfavorite store (even though I know there are things to get political about with regards to Walmart). My quarrels with Walmart that day in August were trivial, and I meant this post to be no more than relishing in their triviality. :-)

Here is how to survive the lines without fretting: Load up on magazines from the newstand rack before you get in line. I look for long lines now so that I can catch up on the popular culture. My Wal-Mart even carries the Economist!
By the way, Sam Walton was a Presbyterian, and he left a HUGE chunck of his estate to the mainline church for missions. (or humanitarian projects,as it were)
I share your sentiments regarding Wal-Mart. Here at the Trust, Wal-Mart is something of a dirty word. We like to call it the Evil Empire instead.
Posted by: sarah at 11.08.04 08:26Stina's comments are fixed.
I only like to go to WalMart on Wednesday evenings. That's when the rest of the Bible Belt is at Wednesday night church. Our church doesn't have Wednesday night stuff, so it I'm free to go on the least busy time.
Jack and I like to reject Wal-Mart for their ludicrous company practices, but your reasons are all excellent as well. =)
Posted by: Erica at 11.08.04 09:32It drives me crazy when WALMART of all places is out of a product (especially something as expensive and necessary as baby formula).
Your thoughts reminded me of this entry on my friend Anne's blog... http://annecdotes.blogspot.com/2004/07/shopping-at-wal-mart.html#comments
Posted by: Rebecca at 11.08.04 09:48I've just realized that there are certain benefits to living in the middle of a sparcely populated, hickish area. None of the problems you described have been a problem in my experience, except perhaps at Christmas.
Of course, I have a tendency in my gut to dislike big business. But, the world only works in certain ways. You have to choose between low prices and small, heterogenous businesses.. and I always end up choosing the low prices :)
Posted by: mott at 11.08.04 11:11I avoid WalMart like the plague, and shop at Target as much as possible.
Posted by: rubykate at 11.08.04 11:30i hate the one item per bag thing! how much can we waste??? it happens at the grocery store too if you chose plastic over paper.
Posted by: charity at 15.08.04 10:24But at least you can recycle those plastic bags at almost any grocery store! I don't think you can recycle the paper ones (poor trees).
Posted by: Rebecca at 17.08.04 09:41I reuse my paper bags, bringing them back to the store. And when I can't reuse them anymore, I can recycle all my paper bags at Whole Foods, which is where I mostly shop anyway.
Posted by: Jeannette at 17.08.04 09:47When given a choice, I always choose paper bags over plastic. Paper is the renewable resource.
Posted by: mom2 at 17.08.04 14:22I hate Walmart because it is dirty, the employees are dirty, the people who shop there are dirty, everything is filthy. It's like one big, stinking, indoor State Fair Rodeo bathroom. Target is clean, the people are clean, bathrooms are clean. I have nothing against people in general. However, if you have no teeth, keep your mouth closed. Wash your hands if you are dealing with the public and a Nascar shirt does not constitute propper dress attire, but I guess it does at Walmart.
Posted by: Doogie at 30.08.04 11:45I shop at Target. The bill is the same and I enjoy the clean store with helpful employees. Never will I shop at Walmart. Walmart stores are cesspools.
Posted by: Karen at 29.12.04 20:48I agree with several people about walmart. I hate going there. When you get there as said before, there is never a spot. Some idiot is walking up the drive isle and wont move out of your way. People who are about to leave. They will sit in the cars just to piss you off while you wait for there spot. Then when you pass they pull out. Once you get in walmart, like another person said the carts are usually gimp. I can never get in a out of walmart quickly. I have to put aside atleast a hour to just go a buy 1 or 2 things. WHen you are shopping in the stores you cant get through the isles. People start shoppnig and leave full carts in the isles. To many people to move around, almost always a traffic jam of people with carts. THe store is dirty, the people are rude. The thing i hate the most, if you are a smoker, you can only go to isle 17 (in our store) because people have ran off with there groceries not paying while the cashier has went to get them smokes. So say you wanna go to walmart, say buy some water and some smokes, you have to wait a hour in isle 17 to get that one item. Target has definitly by far become my favorite store. I love going there, you can shop in peace, the store and clean and the people are SO sweet!
Posted by: Heather at 24.02.05 09:56look, i dont even know where to beginn! i hate walmart so much, and there are so many reasons!
look, i dont think its me saying walmart is like hell on earth, think about it... all walmart is is a giant pawn shop! all they sell is crap! at least target has their own line of off brand food, and knock off appliances! but walmart dosent have any thing! just crap! ok, ill admit it, i do go to walmart once and a while, but when i do they somehow fnd a way to make me pitty them more! such as...
1. i go to walmart to get so lightbulbss, and a woke, whom i suspect was retarted, came up to me, grabbed my arm, and screamed "CAN I HELPPPPPPPPPP YOOU????!!!"
2. when you walk into walmart, a feeling of disgust befalls me. i mean, when you walk in its eather crowded with people, or crowded with shipments!!! i gives me a migrane!
so, those of you who agree with me PLEASE E-MAIL ME! ( pinksimpson1321@yahoo.com )
THANKS!
today i was at the local walmart to get some pictures developed at the one hour photo (only bc target's was going to take 3 hours) and i go to pick up my pictures and the guy at the counter says those look professional i cannot give those to you because they are copyrighted by a professional photographer. he STOLE my film negatives and the pictures and shredded them. these pictures were of my girlfriends senior prom that we just attended. i am a sophmore in college and have taken a lot of political science classes and i know that there is no such law to private photographs. To make things worse he was going to make me pay for the pictures they developed but had just shredded. i am VERY mad at walmart and have decided to boycott the store beyond what i have before.
Posted by: Kevin at 25.05.05 00:56I shop at Target too and I don't care if I end up paying more! Walmart is dirty and the people are dirty. The parking lot is poorly designed. The walkways inside the store are frustrating because they pile all that crap in the middle. Speaking of crap....that's ALL THEY SELL!
Posted by: MT at 01.06.05 11:48i hav no idea why i am on this site, i am english, have been to america twice and oh my GOD walmart it soooooo huge and it has absolutely everything it is so different from anything in england and what are you all talking abot with the cart/buggie thing?? a cart is actually a kart and that is like you know, a go-kart to race in and a buggie is a pram for toddlers. THE THINGS IN SHOPS ARE CALLED TROLLEYS! get it right!!

Posted by: DTB at 19.06.05 01:09walmart stores are cesspools because the management does not give a care...they walk around like ostriches as if everything is always okay. But then again i guess it is for them and their bonuses. Instead of alleviating problems they evade them. But the sad part is, the problems don't go away.
Posted by: sarah at 30.06.05 01:04back in november of last year a family from our neighborhood lost eveything in a horrific house fire. they had just the clothes on their backs and nothing eles. they lost all there christmas presents. It was a family of 5 with 3 small kids and they were devasted. a family member went to walmart to see if they would donate anything to help this family and they told them NO we dont donate items! he couldnt believe how rude this store mgr was. He then went to kmart to try his luck there. And boy was he suprised they told him to go get whatever he needed and it would be taken care of. the total came to something like 1,200.00 dollars of merchandise. and the workers all got togather and made them a christmas dinner basket with all the trimmings. i will forever shop at that store because they care!!!!
I HATE WALMART
The problem with Walmart is they are so cheap that everyone cannot afford to NOT go there! And because of the prices we put up with the crappy service, the long lines, the hellhole they call the parking lot, the snotty managers, the employees who don't care if you dropped dead in your tracks, and the cheap quality of the products- no we put up with the crap because it saves us a buck or two. But here is my theory- shop at another store. Put locals shops back in business, go where proper service is given and let them know that's why you are shopping there, shop at Target or Kmart or another reputable store, because if Walmart isn't getting our money- then they HAVE to jack up their prices to make up for lost sales(taking away the low price factor), maybe even hire employees with manners, or even- just maybe- hire managers who truly care and order products for the public that are quality products. You see, I just got off the phone with a Walmart "better service help line" employee and was never so utterly disgusted with service in my entire life. The women(that's right I had to talk with more than one) was rude, had an attitude problem, and talked over me when I was speaking. I have a baby registry there and am canceling it immediately. Not that they care- but I have dignity and will not allow myself to be degraded or treated poorly to save a buck or two. I will register at Target- same prices and better service- because I don't want my 80 year old Grandma to be treated like crap when she is only trying to buy her newest grandbaby a present!
Posted by: Hello at 20.08.05 11:32Don't know who you are...couldn't find your name in your critism. Convenient, ehe? Isn't it so easy to sit on your backside and throw stones at others that happen to be moving about. You admit that you are lazy, but have you acknowledged the fact that most of the problems that exist in the world are allowed to continue because of the laziness of folks. It seems that you find it to be passively permissible to be lazy, but offensive to be a company seeking a profit. You can either be a person seeking to build or a person seeking to destroy. Some try to maintain but they have always failed because the passage of time seams to overcome them. Have you ever questioned to yourself.... Is it that Wal-Mart is so bad, or is it that you are lazy, by your own admission, and by virtue of the fact that you are not accomplishing anything of meaning, and feel a need to attack anyone who is. Maybe that will make you feel better about yourself. My advise to you is to get off of your ass and do something. Stop feeling that you are intitled. Shop where you want to. If the service at Wal-Mart isn't pleasing you then go somewhere else. Shop at your favorite "Mom and Pop", but I fear that you will find that in many cases the store was already closed due to the competition from other retailers who offered better prices through better efficiencies before Wal-Mart ever arrived. The real issue here is whether the future of America will continue in the direction of constantly seeking the improvement of the opportunities of the people of the America, or whether we will succomb to the socialist ideals of everyone is entitled to everything, regardless of how lazy they may be.
Posted by: Loren at 15.11.05 21:49I admit that Wal-Mart has many problems; but till you work at Wal-Mart you can not complain. Maybe the reason that the employees wear less than new clothes is that the company does not pay enough so that the employees can all wear Donney and Bourke? It is also quite possible that the reason that the employees are rude is that the customers come into the store with the attitude that they are so much better than Wal-Mart employees. Why not try to have a little compassion for the people that work there instead of treating them like dogs. The employees are not there to clean up your McDonalds mess that your child has decided to throw on the floor in the clothing section or your half drank artisian water you left at the register. These people are trying to support their families just like you. Futhermore if you don't care for Wal-Mart thats fine just don't continue to go there.
Posted by: at 14.12.05 11:12I do feel for the employees. I have never worked there, but you would think that Walmart was successful enough to pay them better. I think they treat employees and customers equally bad. They have an attitude that the store rules all. I think that the major problem with Wal-Mart is that they are so concerned with the bottom line, that they don't care what they have to do to keep a few bucks. It is unfortunate that so many cities and individuals are becoming dependent on Walmart. You get treated like crap and you keep coming back for more because you don't know what else to do! Everytime I catch a wrong price, I call them on their price guarantee ($3 off their total purchase or free if it is under $3) and they find some excuse why they can't honor it. Last time, they told me that if the item was over $3 they were only allowed to charge the correct price. I finally resisted and demanded an explanation or I was going to talk to the manager. She finally admitted that she would get in trouble if she honored it. The experience gave me a new perspective and I realize that employees and customers alike are both victims of this retailing giant. I think when employees treat customers unfairly, they are just doing it to protect themselves from a company that know no loyalties except to its bottom line.
Posted by: Andrea at 20.12.05 15:46Walmart Sucks, where did that link go?
i am officially done with walmart! my brother always hated it because he's a union worker, but i've learned to hate it over the last few years. i'm sick of parking a mile away, the store is filthy, unorganized, and poorly laid out. it pisses me off that i have to wait so damn long to checkout. you know damn well that this corporation can afford to pay 2 or 3 more cashiers to open up more checkouts!! the last time i was there was 3 weeks ago. i needed baby formula. i found it quickly, but every line was 10 deep. i think there were 5 lines, but they have about 15 checkouts.after 15 minutes, i walked out, left my cart right there. it's always like this, normal days or holidays. at the kenosha store on 52nd st, there's a scary old lady greeter that always touches and gets into the face of my infant daughter. she's always saying how she's going to steal all the babies and i can just leave the baby with her. she once left her post and followed me about 30 feet away where i was talking to a friend of mine who also has a baby and has had run ins with scary old lady. i know there are people who have no choice but walmart, i'm just glad that i'm not one of them... i recommend shopko, target, and walgreens(for formula).
Posted by: GLEN at 03.01.06 18:46IF YOU DONT LIKE WALMART YOU DONT HAFE TO SHOP THERE!!!!!!! THERE ARE ONLY A MILLION OTHER STORES AND ITS NOT LIKE YOUR GOING TO BRAKE THEM, PEOPLE LIKE YOU WILL CONTINUE TO SHOP THERE MAYBE EVEN YOU
Posted by: SAM at 10.01.06 17:17Someday, when you people wake up and see what Wal-Mart is all about (exploiting people without educations, other expectations and deep depressions) making China into a big time exporter,
Remember when Wal-Mart used to brag about how the stores carried products "proudly made in the U.S.A.?" And the courts finally made them carry birth control products? Wal-Mart has totally wiped out the middle class merchants, and if you comparison shop, their shit isn't all that lower priced either, unless you want a 10 gallon jar of pickels. The produce is horrid, tomatoes go bad in 2 days, cucumbers get mushy, their bags of potatoes rot (what is that terrible smell?) It can't be that bag of potatoes, I just bought them 3 days ago!!!!!! AMERICA NEEDS UNIONS, TO KEEP CORPORATIONS LIKE WAL-MART FROM EXPLOITING WORKERS. THEY ARE DRAINING TAXPAYERS WHEN THEY DON'T PAY THEIR EMPLOYEES A LIVING WAGE! THE GOVERNMENT HAS TO SUBSIDIZE THEIR WORKERS WITH FOOD STAMPS AND HEALTH CARE, BECAUSE THEY'VE LEARNED HOW TO GET INTO THE GOVERNMENT'S POCKETS, GIVING THEIR WORKERS PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT WITH NO BENEFITS. HAVE YOU BEEN TO THE ELECTRONICS DEPT. AND BEEN WAITED ON BY A GUY WITH THREE TEETH AND A WAD OF CHEWING TABACCO?
I HAVE. I THINK MY LOCAL WAL-MART HAS A THREE TATOO MINIMUM TO WORK THERE.

Posted by: at 25.03.06 01:35As for comments on the cart-You'll always find one with garbage in it or sticky handrails from a drooly baby. Walmart's clientel have a lot to do with why shopping is not a pleasure when ya go there. Ever try shopping where the overhead speakers were way too loud with a cashier voice searching for a manager to come up front and make an executive decision? Or a customers baby screeching to the top of his or her lungs a football field away? I kind of like shopping at Target because of this experience. At least they have two way radios to communicate and their elevator music is lower keyed, and the customers kids are more well behaved.

Posted by: Josh L. at 21.06.06 18:40I am laughing my ass off reading these comments because I thought I was all alone with my feelings for walmart. I could not hate walmart anymore than I do. My friends and fellow idiots in my city don't understand but they are mindless walmart shoppers. You drive up and the parking lot is full all the way to the back. Every inbred retard and their mother is shopping at walmart appearantly. The first 50 rows are designated for handicapped which is unreal. You walk in to be greeted and then later harrassed by the grim reaper himself. You try to walk through the store only to be stuck behind a family of 12. Then, the best part, the lines! Oh yes, they have 30 registers but only 3 cashiers. I waited in line 20 minutes the other night and I was the second person waiting! The huge lady in front of me was bitching about why her buttermilk wasn't considered a WIC product. If I haven't said it before, I hate walmart, and I hate the fatass bitches that try to use foodstamps for buttermilk!!!
Posted by: at 11.07.06 00:29I worked at WalMart when I was in high school. Believe me, management does not give a d***. As a cashier, some lady yelled at me because she said I rang her chips up wrong. She made such a fuss that everyone was starring at me. She continued to scream and asked me what I was going to do about it. I told her she was a stupid b*tch, which really caused a commotion. By the time a manager came, everyone was so pissed they were either leaving or glaring at this lady. Anyway, the manager didn't believe that I called her a name and I never got in trouble. Point being, no one at WalMart will ever get in trouble because management does not give a rat's a** about your complaints. Their whole goal is to shut you up and get you out of the store. Trust me. There's no point in complaining. No one cares.
Posted by: Jenn at 13.07.06 02:46Well isn't this funny...I work at Walmart and make pretty good money..I'm not uneducated and I have all of my teeth..I buy some things from Wally World but mostly I shop elsewhere..Why? You might ask? Because of the people like all of you that shop there !! That's why !! I asked my Manager oneday " Do ya ever feel like you're in a really bad rendetion of Dawn of the dead?" He laughed and said "Yeah, they won't move for anything will they?" You people walk around like all employees are invisible !! Nevermind if we have a pallett full of cases of bleach, you don't see us coming, All you are doing is roaming around like mindless freaks looking for what you can get for nothing...The problem stems from the original (good intentioned) "Walmart way" of pleasing the customer...You didn't need a reciept, you could bring items back that you finished using..."Well yeah,we'll take it back because we trust you." Your word was gold..The stores were clean, you were waited on with a smile..Hell they even had people on roller skates to make price checks faster at the registers..That became a thing of the past because someone Bitched that "They almost ran over me.." It's dangerous..Waaaa waaa" I'll sue this store!!!! Americans famous last words these days...That makes me sick...One of your kids poos on aisle 20 ,someone else slips in it and it's "THE BIG CORPORATIONS FAULT" Nevermind that most of your kid's have no upbringing and NO respect for anything outside of thier chaotic worlds..We still accept used potty chairs, used lawnmowers full of gas, used gloves that we haven't sold since 1996 etc..Why? I have no idea why..Why would anyone want to appease a bunch of selfish ingrates like us...It's a Loss when they take this shit back....Why can't someone succeed and people be happy for them...You had the same chance to build your own corporation, they aren't robbing you!!! You are willing to spend money there!!! So stop whining ,get off your ass and actually do something with yourselve and stop trying to get something for nothing...If you hate it so much Ahhhhh, DON'T SHOP THERE..Maybe? It's just a thought..Seems simple enough to me...Someone becomes rich or famous in this country anymore, they instantly are evil , BUT YET, everyone wants a piece of the pie...Bunch of Sue happy assholes...Get a life .....Call it your own...
Posted by: Margaret at 24.07.06 02:32Here is my 2 cents.....i've read alot about people talking about rude, dirty, fat, poor & whatever else type of people that work/shop at Wal-Mart..well that's everywhere...people are jackasses anywhere you go..my problems with Wal-Mart are...the employees know nothing about what they sell...at least when you go to Best Buy or Home Depot etc. the employees know what they are selling & you don't end up making a bad purchase...& Wal-Mart is not cheap...they never have sales & what they put on clearance is stuff thats damaged or stuff noone wants & is still over-priced, I get clothes at JC Penny & i can get name brands cheaper than Wal-Marts crap that they sell, I have family that has worked there & they were treated very poorly & underpaid...& i have no clue what the door greeter person is for because all they do is stand around looking stupid, someone said that they have so many registers but like 2 or 3 open, which is always the case when i go there...standing in line forever! BUT...the one thing that gets me the most is when i see barbie dolls or other dolls & the white dolls are regular price but the african american ones are clearanced...THE EXACT SAME DOLL!...the managers excuse "no one wants the black ones so they are reduced for sale"...ok well this should offend everyone black or white. & so what they take back returns...they should because most of the stuff shouldnt be sold in the first place...its crap...maybe if the stuff was made by someone who wasnt earning 23 cents an hour they may put more time & care into products....all Wal-Mart does is raise prices....the charity stuff they do is bull...toys for tots is done by the community bringing items & putting them in a box then Wal-Mart gets to say "we donated to charity"....no we did they didnt....so dont shop there, yeah i get it...so like...i dont anymore & lazy?...no, i am not, i am quite active in my community which is why Wal-Mart will not open up shop in my town

Posted by: Carla at 25.07.06 04:53I used to love Wal-mart. I liked it much better before they started making all of the stores into supercenters, but I still liked the store and thought it convenient to buy grocery items there as well as the other items I needed. As of today, I will try to avoid the Wal-mart in my hometown. I am just tired of the crowded aisles, rude and nosy employees, lack of management, lack of customer service. I have complained to management countless times about problems in the store where I shop and it has just fallen on deaf ears. Today was just the last straw. First of all, I go in for a particular item after fighting through the crowd of inconsiderate people in front of me who just walked slowly and parked themselves in the entrance to the store. I get to the shelf where I was sure they would have restocked the aisle when they were out of this item 2 weeks ago when I was looking for it. The shelf has not been restocked and they are still out of the item I was looking for ( why am I not surprised?) So, I go on to get the scrubs that I need for nursing school. I was glad to hear that Wal-mart carried them because they would be inexpensive and being a nursing student, I need to save money. Well, while I am looking, my kids are playing in the rack of clothes. ( what kid doesn't? ) By the way, all they had left in the color I needed was one pair of pants that were the wrong size for me. That figures. : ) Anyway here I am already frustrated because today, Wal-mart has nothing in stock that I made the trip for, my kids are misbehaving and I am getting on to them and here comes this old hag with a Wal-mart vest on telling me that my kids don't need to be playing in the clothes. Hello? I just got on to them. They are stopping. It just made me so mad. I guess because of the way she did it. Anyway, just last week I was in there and this very nosy cashier was ringing up my order and I was purchasing some personal hygiene products. This very rude, cashier began to question me about the product. Just all kind of questions. Like "do you use these?" and "what for?" I mean I was so embarrassed. I complained to the manager, but don't think it did any good. Anyway, I think I am through with Wal-mart. In one of the posts earlier I read just don't shop there if you don't like it and I think I just won't shop there anymore.
Posted by: at 07.08.06 22:35I hate Walmart, everything about the place is an illusion....from the fake greet when you walk in the door, to the thirty registers when you try to leave.
Walmart is an acre of consumer crap amoungst a backdrop of smile-faced logos, blue vests and cold conrete. The mindless zoombies who are bewildered by the "low" prices litter the ailes with their dumbfounded realization of their purchasing power for crap that they don't need.
I live in a town of 80,000 people. The one Walmart which already exists has expanded into a supercenter, and now they want to open another Walmart on the other side of town. Of course the other side of town is a 5 min. drive? So why does Walmart want to open this second store? The answer is simple...to drown out all competition. They're not opening this second store to make a profit from it. Rather it's to let all small businesses know that they have the finances to destroy them, both in the short or long run.
I don't have any kids and I understand that for those of you that have a strict budget walmart is a potential bargain and relief for everything else in life that has become inflated. However for the rest of you I ask. Do you want Walmart to become your downtown or epicenter of community. To me it all seems too controlled and sterile. Do a little work and you can find bargains all the time outside of Walmart and you won't have to park a mile away...GOD bless America and Americans
Although I disagree with your disparaging remarks about WalMart, I just wanted to back you up. They are carts, not buggies. Buggies are those things Amish drive. With horses. On dirt roads. Not on concrete. Or in a grocery store. Get it right.
