POLL: Christmas music
Inspired by Linnea's comment and my general desire to add some new blood to my Christmas music collection, I think I will post this poll.
What is your favorite Christmas music album, and why (if you choose to divulge such personal information)?
Also, feel free to share favorite songs. Linnea's comment about the St. Stephen's Day Massacre song is a good example.
I will start. Right now it's hard to say which is my favorite Christmas music album. I'm kind of burnt out on all the ones I have lying around. But at the same time, I love them all for different reasons. Probably pretty close to the top is Charlie Brown's Christmas for reasons that are practically self-evident. It's just good, easy, enjoyable, cozy music. Sir Neville Mariner's "Christmas with the Academy" album is nice, too. Classic carols with the Academy of St.-Martin-in-the-Fields orchestra and chorus. A good staple. And it contains one of my absolute favorite carols, which is "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree." In the more classical bent, I've been into Benjamin Britten's Ceremony of Carols and Heinrich Schutz's (17th c dude) Weinachs Historie.

My favorite is "Songs of Angels" with Robert Shaw, et al. It just has ALL the best traditional "carols of the season" (as Bill Higgins always said at Madrigals). The best one on there is "In the bleak midwinter" with the tune by... is it Holst? It's so beautiful and melancholy.

we're suckers for the windham hill collections, although there's always a couple tracks that deserve skipping.
I picked up the David Grisman Christmas album last year and it is a lot of fun, as you'd expect from the Dawg: jazzy, peppy, a bit silly at times, and of course mandolicious.

Yes, my Academy of StM-intheFields has all the greats, including that "in the bleak midwinter" and "jesus Christ the apple tree."
Bob, it's okay. I like windham hill, too. ;-) The Grisman sounds great. That's kind of more what I'm in the mood for as far as new Christmas music into my collection.

I've got a compilation cd of Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and a couple of the other guys from that time that just kicks!! And also, for a peppy atmosphere, the soundtrack to Mixed Nuts is really fun. It's a nice variety.

Did "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree" get sung at Madrigals a few years ago?

By far my favorite is Over the Rhine's Christmas CD, titled The Darkest Night of the Year! I just saw them in concert the other night, they are just so fantastic!

yes, "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree" was sung at Mads. But I loved it even before then. ;-)

I like nuevo accoustic Christmas stuff -- current favorite is a bootleg of Andrew Peterson's last live Christmas show. I also like _Your King Has Come_.

My favorite is the King Choir's christmas carols. I listened to it last night as I was making an Autumn Harvest Pie. I cannot wait to try it tonight; it has apples, pears and cranberries in it.

That pie sounds AWESOME! What's the recipe?? I just happen to have apples, pears, and cranberries in my fridge. :-) Bet it makes your house smell yummy, too.
Okay. Gotta study. I finish my finals TODAY!!!

The pie came out good, a little tart. It is from Martha Stewart's christmas cookbook. Let me know if you want it.
I am in Maryland and am working for a resident screening firm. The California girl in me is having to adjust to the winters, espically when we get 15 inches of snow in one weekend.
It is great to read what is going on in your life!
