hiatus
I'm back home, but my blogging hiatus may not be over yet. Apparently Bellsouth thought we had switched phoned carriers. We don't have a phone line currently, thus can't dial into the internet, until our little problem is sorted out, wh. here in the developing world of NOLA could take an unestimable amount of time.
I got home yesterday evening. It's so hot here! It's unbelievable! Chattanooga and the mountain feel like Antarctica in comparison. I actually used a hot water bottle a couple of nights while I was up there, because the air conditioning was so cold to me. This is the third August I've lived here, and every time I'm just astounded at how hot it gets.
I had such a wonderful time with Grace and Joanna. We didn't do much. We mostly just hung out together and drank tea. I was positively soaked with tea! Wonderful. I went by the English Rose to pick up some good Brit tea in their import store. Also went to Greyfriar's several times and brought back beaucoup coffee. Wednesday evening we made pasta, and my cousin Linnea came over for supper, and so did my old friend Sarah Barker, who has got to be one of my most favorite people in the world. I'm always happier when I'm with Sarah.
I also got a chance to meet Dr. Nielsen, the new pres at Cov. We had a nice little chat, and I was glad to hear his opinions about some things, namely making Cov a real academic institution that can prepare students for professional scholarship among other things. And he understands what that means. We bumped into a few other former professors while we were walking around campus. It's crazy how some of them (I guess older ones...well, okay, just one) just can't conceive that musicology is a scholarly discipline and get his mind around the fact that I'm not performing or really doing anything with cello. He just sees me as Cellist and nothing else. I was a little disappointed because I wanted this particular prof to be proud of me for going on into grad school. But at the same time, I don't really care. His opinion doesn't really affect me. It's been over a year since I've been up there, so it was neat to see how some things have changed and how some things have stayed the same.
(Mike, I went by your new office and you weren't there. Sorry I didn't get a chance to say hello.)
A week from today I'll be back up "north" in Greenville, SC to be in Krista Deutschmann's wedding. I'm looking forward to being with her and her family, but I'm not ready to think about getting back in the car. And for that matter, I'm definitely not ready to start school in a week, either.
So that's my life so far. No great thoughts. My brain is just off except for necessary activity. When school starts, I'll probably start writing more faithfully again, because I'll be sitting up there in Baton Rouge, with my little computer as my only friend. So I'll talk to myself in a blog entry, creating internal companionship.
